50g ball of soft, luxurious balmerino™ yarn. Grown in Scotland from balmerino™ (Scottish merino) sheep. Scoured, combed, spun and dyed in Yorkshire by experts. This yarn is produced on a nature friendly farm that promotes biodiversity, supporting insect and bird life.
The Sheep
This sheep flock is called balmerino™. The sheep are a combination of a Merino crossed with other Scottish breeds. This cross has been developed to create a sheep that has the hardiness to thrive in the Scottish climate and additionally fine, luxurious wool, so soft it can be worn next to the skin. The flock are managed organically; certified by the Soil Association and are also certified by Pasture For Life.
The Farm
It was through a deep-rooted ambition to boost insect and bird populations on the farm that balmerino™ was conceived.
The sheep are managed by rotational grazing which reduces the need for additional inputs. Rotational grazing promotes long pasture growth, allowing pastures to flower and seed to support an abundance of wildlife.
The change in management on our farm has notably improved bird populations, particular the curlew whose long and heartwarming call can be heard from anywhere on the farm.
The Yarn
In June 2023, the first wool clip was made. This enabled balmerino™ (Scottish merino) wool to be put onto the market; the wool has a low micron count which means it is very fine and soft and can be worn next to the skin. The wool is luxurious and rare to the British Isles.
