The Colony Mitts are inspired by the Abbeyhill Colonies in Edinburgh. Designed and built by a Co-operative group of craftsman and artisans, the purpose built developments allowed workers to invest a small amount to be part of a larger community and create what is now an iconic and unique form of housing in the city.
As their symbol, they used the bee hive - a colony of artisans working together to build a thriving community. These mitts take their motif from the honeycomb structure found in bee hives to celebrate the Colonies.
These mitts were designed especially for the Colony of Artists festival held in the Abbeyhill Colonies in Edinburgh each September. Knit in the round from the bottom up, the simple colourwork pattern creates a striking effect that will leave your hands warm, while your fingers are free to carry on with the essential tasks of living.
Yarn: Ginger’s Hand Dyed Pep in Your Step Worsted (100% Superwash Merino 200m/ 219yds per 115g/ 4oz skein)
C1: Melon Balls on Fire 1 (1, 1) skein
C2: Bourbon on Water 1 (1, 1) skein

Needles: 4 mm /US 6 preferred needles for working small circumferences*
